The Different Types of Chargers
If you own or are planning to own an electric vehicle, then you’ll need an electric charging station. You have a variety of options depending on the type of charger you want and your driving habits. The three types of EV chargers are:
Level 1: This is the standard charger that you received when you bought your electric vehicle. It’s plugged into a standard three-prong outlet and requires no special installation. However, it also charges very slowly and can take as long as 20 hours to fully charge your vehicle.
Level 2: This type of charger connects to a J1772 plug and requires a dedicated 240-volt circuit, so you’ll need a professional electrician to install the circuit. This isn’t a homeowner special job for several reasons, so don’t try to install the circuit. No matter how familiar you are with electricity, if you’re not a licensed electrician and the circuit causes a fire, then your insurance company may not pay to repair the damage. A level 2 charger usually takes about three hours to fully charge your battery, and many manufacturers now include a level 2 charger with the purchase of an electric vehicle.
Level 3: Level 3 chargers are standalone devices that are available at public charging stations. Although they’ll provide a charge sufficient for about 160 miles to your electric vehicle in only about 30 minutes, they’re primarily designed for commercial applications. They’re prohibitively expensive and draw a substantial amount of power. If you need EV charger installation in Cape Cod, I can help you. I come to your home; you can expect the following:
- Full site and equipment inspection before I install anything.
- Electrical system upgrades as necessary to support the increased electrical system needs.
- Installation of equipment according to Mass state, and NEC code requirements and regulations.
- Start-up inspection to ensure equipment functionality.
I will be happy to answer all your questions. We won’t leave until you’re familiar with the operation of your EV charger and are comfortable using it.
How Are EV Chargers Installed?
Installing an EV charger for your home is as simple as plugging it into an outlet. However, installing the proper outlet with the proper electrical circuitry is the technical part, and it must be done by a licensed electrician. Depending on the type of EV charger you have, you may need to upgrade your electrical circuits in your home since a level 2 charger must have a dedicated circuit to work satisfactorily. You have the option of hardwiring the charger to your electrical panel or plugging it into an outlet. However, you’ll need a licensed electrician to install the dedicated circuit and hardwire the charger to the panel. Usually, the procedure takes time, but that can vary depending on your unique installation needs. Contact me at (508) 280-9533.
